Gibson
Acoustic and electric vintage guitars, lapsteels, mandolins till 1969.
Gibson invented the archtop guitar as we know it and has remained one of the better makers. The most collectible Gibson archtops are the larger models made from the early 1930's to 1959.

Fender
Electric vintage guitars, basses, amplifiers till 1969
For most collectors, pre-1966, Fender vintage guitars and amps were the desirable ones. Although CBS purchased Fender (officially) on January 3rd 1965, it took some time till the guitars changed.

Martin
Martin has been making some of the best flat top acoustic guitars since the mid 1800's. Martin's other lines of instruments (electrics, archtops, mandolins) is not nearly as desirable or collectible as their flat top models. Because of this, any models other than flat tops (such as Martin's archtops and electrics) are not very collectible.

Inside a 1954 Fender Stratocaster
The Stratocaster was introduced by Fender in the spring of 1954. The first month of production was about April, though there are some prototype examples seen with earlier dates. What follows is an inside view of a fall 1954 Strat.
Note earlier vintage 1954 Strats, within the first two months of production, are slightly different than later vintage 1954 Strats. Most obvious are these features of the very early (first 200) 1954 Strats:
* Serial number on the plastic tremolo cover plate instead of the metal neck plate.
* The bakelit knobs are a slightly different shape, with smaller "skirts".
* The Strat case is shaped like the guitar (known as a "poodle" case) instead of a center pocket rectangular tweed.
